What does running mean to me
An ex-colleague and a good friend
of mine from my McAfee days asked me this question via LinkedIn messaging the
other day, 'What does running Marathon mean to you?' It got me thinking
and I thought I should collect my thoughts and put it in a blog. If and when
another person asks me the same question, I can point them at this blog.
Running a marathon is a
life-changing experience that pushes physical and mental limits, testing your
endurance, resilience, and determination. Completing a marathon is a
significant achievement that can bring numerous benefits; however, it requires
careful preparation and attention to potential risks like with anything in
life. Whether it’s jumping off a plane or swimming in the ocean or mountain-climbing or summiting Everest.
Why I run regularly and occasionally participate in marathons,
Physical Health Benefits: Running
a marathon can improve cardiovascular health, boost metabolism, and increase
lung function. Regular training can also reduce the risk of chronic diseases,
such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
Mental Health Benefits: The sense
of accomplishment and pride that comes with completing a marathon can boost
self-esteem and confidence. Running can also reduce stress and anxiety by
releasing endorphins, also known as "feel-good" hormones.
Personal Growth: Training for a
marathon requires discipline, dedication, and perseverance. These qualities can
translate to other areas of life, helping you develop a stronger sense of self
and improved goal-setting skills.
Community and Camaraderie:
Running a marathon can be a social experience, allowing you to connect with
fellow runners, share experiences, and build lasting relationships. Although, I
train mostly solo!
If you were to take to running
marathons, some precautions and safety considerations,
Gradual Training: Gradually
increase your mileage and intensity to avoid injuries. Allow your body time to
adapt to the demands of running long distances.
Proper Nutrition and Hydration:
Fuel your body with a balanced diet and stay hydrated to maintain energy levels
and prevent dehydration.
Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to warning signs of
injury or illness and take rest days as needed. Ignoring your body's signals
can lead to more severe problems.
Safety Precautions: Run with a buddy, carry identification, run
in a park and follow traffic rules to ensure your safety during training if you
do train on the city roads.
My 2 cents on Marathon Training
Create a Structured Training Plan:
Develop a training schedule that includes a mix of running, cross-training, and
rest days. There are a zillion plans available on the internet, or you can get
Chat-GPT to make a training plan or best, get a running coach.
Incorporate Strength Training:
Strengthen your core and leg muscles to improve running efficiency and reduce
the risk of injury.
Practice Fueling and Hydration:
Experiment with different nutrition and hydration strategies during training to
find what works best for you.
Get Enough Rest and Recovery:
Prioritize sleep and recovery to allow your body to repair and adapt to the
demands of training.
In conclusion, running a marathon is a rewarding experience that offers numerous physical and mental benefits. However, it requires careful preparation, attention to potential risks, and a commitment to safety precautions. By following a structured training plan, listening to your body, and prioritizing rest and recovery, you can successfully complete a marathon and enjoy the many benefits that come with it. So, lace up your running shoes, and get ready to experience the thrill of running a marathon.
Hey Arun
ReplyDeleteA fairly well rounded answer encompassing all aspects and easily comprehendible to one and all about the "Why you run"?
It brings about the various benefits one derives.,mental, physical, emotional, social and psychological.
We tend to benefit all of these in a way which happens so automatically just by being on your feet on a regular basis.
Nicely explained.
And of course all the necessary do's & don'ts are neatly presented.
Goodluck and thanks for the write-up.
This is a good comprehensive guide of merits of running.. but the question still remains. Why do YOU run? All these benefits can be achieved even with a 5k run. So why do run long distance?
ReplyDeleteI run for the joy of it :)
